The Smoky Mountains were called "land of the blue smoke" by the Cherokee Indians. The distinct blue cast can be seen from the Foothills surrounding the Smokies on many days. The natural habitat of this region is rich and full of variety; streams, lakes and rivers provide beauty as well as a home to wild-life. With four distinct seasons, the climate of the foothills is mild. The mild weather is due to the protection of the surrounding mountian ranges, the Smoky Mountains to the south, and the Cumberland's to the north. These mountain chains make it is a very special place to live and work.
The surrounding counties, Sevier, Jefferson, Blount, Loudon & Knox are all part of the Knoxville metroplex; home to world-class hospitals, educational facilities, sports of every kind, art museums, orchestras, as well as blue grass and country music. No need or desire should go unmet in East Tennessee. There are small towns, hiking trails and some of the best outlet shopping in the Southeast. We are proud to report that we have more restaurants per person than most anywhere in the world. But probably our best characteristic is our southern, appalachian hospitality; kindness, generosity, a willingness to help a neighbor just comes natural. That is why we truly are the "volunteer state". It more than a slogan or a great football team. We believe you will want to make the Foothills of the Smokies your home, or least your home away from home.
There is still room for you! We welcome you to Tennessee!
